To my knowledge,

Promethea was the first website with an original philosophical system composed specifically for the web.

Promethea was the first website with original philosophical content composed specifically for the web, to use an integrated design to take advantage of the medium.

Promethea was the first website to combine activism with an original, cohesive philosophical basis.

Promethea was the first website to feature an original philosophical system which envisions a new type of society, distinct from every society which has existed.

Miscellanea: A new category entitled "New Political Systems" (now "Alternative Political Systems") was started for Promethea in the Open Directory search database which has provided information for such searches as Google, Lycos, and Netscape.

Promethea Facts

While the name Promethea obviously references the Prometheus of mythology, perhaps less obviously Promethea is not a feminine word but neuter plural, at least in the case of this website. It translates most directly to "Promethean things" in Latin or Greek, which in both languages could mean 'Promethean stuff', 'Promethean material', 'Promethean compositions', 'Promethean creations', 'Promethean writings', etc. The name is also a nod to the original Promethean Trilogy, or Prometheia, by the poet Aeschylus, of which only the first part (Prometheus Bound) has survived.

The Promethean Manifesto was originally written and edited extensively in Chicago IL, with some work done in Reading PA, and an important edit in Cambridge MA. Anticonstitution for a Promethean Society was originally written and edited almost exclusively in Chicago, IL. The Way of Prometheus will progress occasionally here in Philadelphia PA or anywhere else I happen to be, previous work having been completed in Chicago, IL and Anchorage, AK. (The writing project I'm focusing on currently is a novel called Pyramid of Babel.) Other compositions were written in one or another of those places, too, and many more have been in progress.

Promethea has been composed and designed over the years using Adobe PageMill, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Macromedia Fireworks, Microsoft Word, and Adobe Photoshop (running on a Umax SuperMac, Powerbook G3, PowerMac G3, iBook, dual G4, or MacBook Pro), printers, lots of paper, several blank notebooks, many pens, a few pencils and fresh air.

The idea of creating a Promethean website came after The Promethean Manifesto had already evolved through several versions as a standalone written essay, during early 1998.

Preliminary design work for Promethea began in September of 1998. After numerous beta versions featuring preliminary versions of The Promethean Manifesto and other writings (which migrated to promethea.org in May 1999), Promethea 1.0 premiered on May 20th, 2000.

The unified concept of a "Promethean society" was invented in mid-1998, standing atop a small mountain, as the sun was rising.
